Interactive Videos with Optional Grading (H5P)

The LLC is excited to announce that you can now make any large video on our streaming server interactive (and gradable) with H5P on Moodle.

What is H5P?

You may be aware that the LLC supports the H5P plugin in its Moodle LMS installation.

As a reminder or an introduction, H5P is a suite of tools and activities for eLearning that are optimized for accessibility and useability, including the popular and unique Interactive Video tool. [https://h5p.org/]

What is the Interactive Video tool?

One of the most powerful tools in the suite is an interactive video builder. It allows you to add three different types of interactions:

  • Quiz interactions (Question: single/multiple choice, T/F, mark the words, drag and drop, etc.)
  • Simple interactions (Text, Image, Table)
  • Adaptivity (Go To) interactions

You can even make conditional questions, where, based on the response, the video will keep playing, skip forward, or jump back to a specific time.

Here is a demo and walkthrough: https://h5p.org/tutorial-interactive-video

Why would I want to use this?

You can break up long videos with additional information, comprehension and attention checks, navigation, and even build in quizzes that go straight to the grade book.

What’s new? You can use any large video file on our servers!

In the past, the HP5 plugin only supported YouTube links or small MP4s. However, the LLC is excited to announce that we have built a pipeline so that you can use any video, of any size, that is on our streaming media server. For example, if you have a long documentary or film that you are using for one of your classes, you could use it in the Interactive Video tool.

How do I use it?

If you are interested in using it, contact your supporting ASE or llc@uw.edu to get started.

To use it, H5P activities must be hosted in our Moodle installation. (H5P is not currently available on UW Canvas installations.)

Most users report that the tool is very easy to learn how to use. We can provide a walkthrough of the options and determine what will be best for your projects. Depending on the need and if you prefer, we can build the exercises for you if you provide guidance on what you would like. Alternatively, you are welcome to use the tool yourself, and we will be on call to answer questions. If you already have a Moodle course on the LLC server and have video clips on our streaming media server, you can get started right away. If you aren’t sure or don’t have one or either of them yet, please contact us (llc@uw.edu).

Interactive Language Timeline Web Tool

The LLC recently built a scrollable timeline interface for displaying data points, images and audio clips related to language in the Pacific Northwest. The interface uses only HTML and CSS (no JS) and offers modal/popups for each time segment. The timeline is coded to allow modular copying/pasting and then editing of elements. If you are interested in using this timeline for an academic project, please contact us and we would be happy to share a copy with you.
