Diversity Statement
Diversity is a core value and premise at the UW Language Learning Center. It is inseparable from the work we do, and necessary for language education. The center strives to spread an awareness of the importance of diversity as we work to create a welcoming, safe, and productive environment for all. We actively work to eliminate discrimination both on and off campus, especially by promoting the benefit of understanding languages and cultures. We recognize that diversity is a crucial asset to any organization and to all of society. Different perspectives enrich our world and foster personal, as well as academic, growth.
We acknowledge that power cannot be disconnected from the linguistic, cultural and academic context in which we work. Therefore, we believe it necessary to provide support, equitable access to resources, and more respectful representation for languages and cultures which are marginalized, underrepresented or undervalued.
We recognize that diversity goes beyond languages and culture, and may include, but is not limited to: race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, citizenship, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical abilities.
We also recognize and respect that our center resides on Duwamish land. xʷəlšucid / dxʷləšúcid (Lushootseed) was, and continues to be, spoken here.
