The LLC maintains three computer labs (UW students only). One of these labs, Denny Hall 158, is open for all students during most (it is very rarely closed for testing) of our normal business hours. Denny 158 is equipped with desktop computers in individual sound dampening carrels which can be used by UW students for drop-in study, language practice and Dawg prints. All of the computers in our labs come equiped with webcams and headphones, and have specialized language related applications installed, such as Praat, ELAN, Audacity, Safe Exam Browser, and other language learning software.
The LLC provides CALL courseware for integration into language curricula, providing self-paced as well as instructor-led learning activities. The courseware consists of interactive multimedia programs with visuals, sound, text, video, and self or teacher-evaluation capabilities.
One tool is American Speech Sounds, which is a software designed to help improve an individual’s spoken English. The software allows users to listen to vowel and consonant sounds, sententences, intonation, and more. Users are able to record their own speech to compare to the guides in the exercises. American Speech Sounds can be accessed on the first 13 computers in any of our computer labs.
The LLC hosts some audio and video series for language learning available to UW NETID holders (e.g., students, staff and faculty). We make these series available in a number of ways. Most of our audio series have been placed on the web for listening by UW students.
The general resources available here were created and owned by the UW. For any resources that aren’t owned by the UW, explicit permission was granted by the publisher for them to be made accessible to UW NETID holders. The LLC does not sell or distribute texts to accompany these language resources. Those who purchase or listen to resources usually already have the printed material or intend to obtain it somewhere else.
The LLC hosts additional media that has other agreements with publishers and licenses which require more restrictive access. If you believe that you need to access a resource that isn’t available for general NETID access, you will need to communicate with your language instructor directly. Most non-general resources are only available for a certain period of time, for a limited number of students, and in a particular format.
